Rob Zombie's "Halloween II" managed to finish 3rd at last weekend's North American box office by grossing $16. 35 million and finishing behind #1 new entry "The Final Destination" (possibly powered by the recent death of DJ AM) ($27. 4m) and "Inglourous Basterds" which had another excellent week although it fell almost 50% off of it's first week take ($19.3m). Since Rob Zombie's budget was only estimated to be about $15 million he's good as long as he clears $50 million before it even hits DVD around Halloween (see the vision?). This weekend marked the official end of the Summer Blockbuster season but the beginning of the all important Fall season that sets up the Holiday Block (Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas & New Year's Day).
The first half of September has a gang of interesting upcoming film releases including "Gamer", "Extract", "Carriers", "9", "Dorian Gray (UK)" & "Whiteout". I expect "Gamer" to be huge, "Extract" could potentially be another "The Hangover" type surprising earning comedy (though I don't think it'll make anywhere near as much) while "Carriers" and "Whiteout" can potentially become a couple of cult films that do well when the rentals drop. I'm not expecting either to hit given that "Gamer", "Extract" and the long awaited CGI film "9" are the odds on favorites to rule the box office in the first half of September.
