Writer/director Judd Apatow's latest film opened at $23.4 million dollars at the North American box office to take the top spot. Seeing as how it was essentially a 2 1/2 hour drama with comedy thrown in I'd have to say it did pretty damn well. It's received mixed reviews from fans as opposed to critics. Those fans are more used to Judd Apatow, Seth Rogen and Adam Sandler being in much funnier films. The studios expected the film to do better at the box office strictly based on the previous track records of each...when will these "experts" learn to take into account special circumstances and to go on a film by film basis. A Sandler drama will not do as well as a Sandler comedy...Duh!
The upcoming blockbuster "G.I. Joe: The Rise Of Cobra" has "shit sandwich" written all over it. I hope that I can somehow get a screener for this movie considering I know that the studio really is dreading what I have to say about it already. From the second I heard they weren't going canon, instead opting for the Sigma 6 storyline and I saw that shitty trailer with those bullshit accelerator suits I just knew they'd fuck up this property something serious. Friday April 7th, Gen X'ers will see yet another one of their childhood favorite cartoons get butchered by the Hollywood studio machine. Fuck!
I have high hopes for this Neill Blomkamp sci fi film "District 9". The early buzz and trailers alone already had me sold but after seeing the second trailer the studio released to promote the film, interest and anticipation for this release completely shot through the roof. Hopefully, it lives up to my (and many other) film fans' expectations mainly because of the impending suckiness of "G.I. Joe: The Rise Of Cobra". I suggest that fans seek solace in other films like "Cold Souls" or "The Goods: Live Hard, Sell Hard" instead of going to see that suckfest. Don't support the bullshit, let Hollywood executives know that if they don't properly respect the properties they're adapting then we don't care to see the results.Films I recommend in theaters (8.1.09-8.15.09) or to add to your queue early or for rental from either Netflix or Redbox:
