The International Push AKA Dartflix Edition # 50

The last few weeks at the box office has been pretty damn interesting. The third installment of the Underworld franchise hit theaters and raked in $20.8 million dollars to come in 2nd. Considering that many experts didn't know what to expect as far as box office receipts were concerned it looks like we may be headed for a fourth entry when it's all said and done.

The oft delayed Elmore Leonard book adaptation (I first mentioned this film back in the early days of this blog) has finally been released after years in developmental limbo. The film premiered and was screened in 3 theaters bringing in slightly over $10K. It's not going to be shown in wide release as it'll more than likely hit DVD in the next few months. Now, let's see if "The Tournament" is ever coming out or if "The Road" has an actual North American release date, shall we?

It isn't that much of a surprise that "Taken" (AKA "96 Hours") with it's provocative commercial and trailers (plus the fact that it's been online for 4 months!) found an audience and brought in $24.7 million dollars at the box office. It also brought in $3 million more dollars yesterday in hopes of getting it's figures up before "Push" hits theaters on the 6th and suspense/thriller "The International" premieres on the 13th. Enough film and box office talk, on to the recommendations:

Bill Nighy (Viktor) and Michael Sheen (Lucian) were two of the bright spots of the original Underworld. At first when I heard Kate Beckinsale wasn't going to be in the movie, I thought no one would watch it...'cause let's face it, you watch Underworld for the cheesy vampire shit and Kate Beckinsale in a skin-tight suit, not for the plot. The new movie sounds like it could be good, and Michael Sheen was dope in the first one, but in the commercial it looks like he's doing a bad impression of the dude from 300.

Speaking of 300...that was an authentic shit festival. You don't need to embellish the most insane military stand in world history with CGI monsters and deformed Spartan ephors getting high on temple fumes. And the heart of the story -- that the Spartans survived for three days and slayed thousands -- revolves around the Spartan's beliefs, their discipline, and their strategy to never, ever deviate from that shield-locked phalanx that made other armies shit themselves. But you wouldn't know that from 300, because Leonidas and co. were racking up six-hit combos, Tekken-style, over music that sounded like a WalMart version of Stabbing Westward. What a shitty movie.

The definitive movie on Thermopylae should have been "Gates of Fire." The book was like a religious experience, the script was supposedly faithful to it, and one of the studios even bought the rights and the script...but Frank Miller's shitty cartoon version got made instead.

The only good ancient epic since Gladiator was Mongol. We need more movies like those, instead of getting run over by really shitty remakes of 80s cartoons and comic books.

But Hollywood ain't gonna stop until they've milked every last dollar and beaten every last franchise to death, rest assured.

Rise of the Lycans was better the Underworld.
Underworld Evolution was GARBAGE!

Taken was surprisingly good. Really good, unfortunately it was on bootleg months ago.

"But Hollywood ain't gonna stop until they've milked every last dollar and beaten every last franchise to death, rest assured."

You're not lying but I have no problem watching more Terminators (they can continue to switch up the actors, no problem and definitely Transformers.

Although I doubt, there are a number of great Star Wars tales that would be far better than the prequels, particularly the story of Darth Bane . .. this is back in the Sith Era. Well the some of the books are tight.

But nevertheless, I agree with you.
