What's New In Dart's iPod #22 AKA When The Levees Broke

Hello, true believers. It’s Dart with yet another edition of my (usually) weekly album review blog. This week, quite a few notable releases leaked on the net so I’ll review those albums today with the exception of Rick Ross’ “Trill” because really who gives a flying fuck about a fake ass “boss” that named himself after a dude that is responsible for flooding the streets of America with a drug that damn near destroyed the hood? Not me.

The albums I’ll review today will go in the following order: Black Spade “To Serve With Love”, Fat Joe “The Elephant In The Room”, Gnarls Barkley “The Odd Couple”, Del The Funky Homosapien “The 11th Hour” and Snoop Dogg “Ego Trippin’”.

Now let's sort all of the madness from this past week out and determine how much of the music that hit the ‘net recently is actually worth purchasing once it’s available for purchase. I don’t rate albums on a scale or assign numerical values to them, I merely try to figure out if they’re worth buying or not. Here's how my "Cop It Or Not" ratings system breaks down below:

Oh No! This CD is a drink coaster/table balancer/doorstop/gerbil/hamster room divider/frisbee/discus/makeshift shield/last ditch choice for a visor/alternate shuriken choice. Sell this shit to whoever is dumb enough to buy it from you.

Maeby (Maybe)! Depending on your own set of personal preferences you might like this joint. Give it a listen first to see if it's in your lane or not.

Mos Def! Cop the album when it drops...'Nuff said.

I do damage to your medulla, cerebrum and cerebellum...you gotta crew betta tell ‘em! © Keith Murray

Texas’ own Black Spade has been making noise on the underground circuit for years. He doesn’t just rhyme but he sings, arranges and produces his own music. Here is his OM Records debut project “To Serve With Love” *Grown Folks Hip Hop Alert!*

Best Joints: To Serve With Love, Love’s Right Here, She’s The One, Evil Love, Lavish Life, The Ship Has Sailed, Good Crazy, Revolutionary Bullshit, The Half That’s Never Been Told, Tale Of 32, Not For The Bullshit, Enjoy The Experience, True Friends, The Genius In You, As We, Where I’m Coming From

Hot Garbage: Actioneer (that’s the one song I couldn’t rock with)

Dart’s Take: If you’re not into vocals with your rapping or an album dealing with real life shit or adult themes then avoid this album like the plague. If you can sit through, let’s say an entire album by Substantial, Hezekiah or Omega Watts then you’ll love this LP. If you don’t know who any of those cats are and you actually like the shit they play on the radio then this is not for you. The second half of the album was more rhyme oriented aand that when it really went into overdrive. Do not sleep on this album. I give it a mos def.

When Fat Joe isn’t making guest appearances in wack niggas videos, racing speedboats with DJ Khaled, pretending to be a drug kingpin or having a ghey ass feud with 50 Cent he makes albums. I hated the first single..and the “street single/video” he put out after that. Then came “That White” produced by DJ Premier and I thought to myself? Is it possible that this album won’t suck after all? Find out below:

Best Joints: The Fugitive, The Crackhouse, Cocababy, K.A.R., Preacher On A Sunday Morning, My Conscience, That White

Hot Garbage: You Ain’t Sayin’ Nothin’ (Plies? Hell naw!), Get It For Life, Drop, I Won’t Tell, 300 Brolic (What the hell was he thinking?)

Dart’s Take: This album sucks so bad I could write a separate blog about everything I hated about it in detail. Fat Joe really thinks he’s from the South now, doesn’t he? Who the fuck is Jackie Rubio? Paulina’s ig’nant ass little sister/cousin? On “K.A.R” Fat Joe says “this ain’t opera!”. The very next song is “300 Brolic” and it features Opera Steve...singing opera!

In summation, this album sucks. Don’t waste your hard earned dollars on this bullshit. Joey, you don’t sell cocaine so stop talking about it on your records! Thank God for that white? No. Thank God for that FFWD button on my iTunes!

The new Gnarls Barkley hit the internet this week and there wasn’t a music messageboard that wasn’t buzzing about it. Can Danger Mouse and Cee Lo Green do it again like they did on “St. Elsewhere”? I’ll let you know now.

Best Joints: She Knows, No Time Soon, Whatever, Who’s Gonna Save My Soul, Run, Would Be Killer, Open Book, Surprise, Going On, Charity Case, Little Better, Neighbors

Hot Garbage: Blind Mary (I didn’t like the first track on the album)

Dart’s Take: This album was damn good. It wasn’t as amazing an experience as the first album because no one knew what to expect and it came completely out of nowhere and leftfield simultaneously. Now, the listening audience knows what to expect from a Gnarls Barkley album. They delivered on this one, the only hiccup being the opening song on the project. Buy it when it drops.

Del is back at it. This time his project is coming out on Definitive Jux as opposed to Hiero Imperium and it’s gonna have an El-P-ish sound to it. Several heads I know are really apprehensive of that. Is “The 11th Hour” worth shelling out your dough on? The answer is below:

Best Joints: Raw Sewage, Bubble Pop, Back In The Chamber, Slam Dunk, Situations, Naked Fonk, Hold Your Hand, Workin’ It, Last Hurrah, I Got You, Funkyhomosapien

Hot Garbage: Foot Down, I’ll Tell You, Str8t Up And Down

Dart’s Take: Overall, I liked this album but it didn’t really grab me the way his previous projects have. Some songs just did absolutely nothing for me. I don’t know if it was the production or what but I just feel that this album needed more joints like “Funkyhomosapien” and “Workin’ It”. More high energy stuff, more bangers, more appearances by Hiero members. This project is far from wack but I wish it was more Heiroish and less Def Juxy. I give it a recommended maybe.

Snoop Dogg has a reality show called "Fatherhood" on VH 1. He also had one of the biggest singles and videos in recent memory with "Sensual Seduction". Interest in this project is through the roof. Does "Ego Trippin'" deliver? Find out below.

Best Joints: Press Play, SD Is Out (is that Aaron Hall?), Gangsta Like Me, Neva Have 2 Worry, Sexual Eruption, Waste Of Time, Sets Up, Deez Hollywood Nights, Whateva U Do, Been Around Tha World, Those Gurlz, One Chance (Make It Good)

Hot Garbage: Life Of Da Party, Cool (why remake a classic?), Staxx In My Jeans, My Medicine (Only Built 4 Everlast Albumz) and Why Did You Leave Me (all remaining tracks were just “meh” to me)

Dart’s Take: The songs on this album that are good are really good and the ones that miss the mark don’t miss by much. I have to commend Snoop for being in the game for going on 16 years and not sounding old and dated like...I dunno Ice Cube. He still has it and his flow is still as nice as ever.

I was hoping that he’d get a little more lyrical but the production on the project more than makes up for it. Terrance Martin, Teddy Riley, Snoop and DJ Quik all did the damn thing. Plus, the Quiksta mixed the whole joint! Too bad we couldn’t get Kurupt and Daz on a track, I give this a highly recommended maybe.

It's About That Time AKA Dartflix Edition #32

This is the time of the year in the cinema world that all of those films with distribution deals that were at the previous film festivals are either released into wider release in theaters or the films that were getting most of the nominations or accolades during awards season and about to come out on DVD finally.

This is also the time of year where a few of my favorite films and series of the year will finally come out on DVD. Just this month the third season of Battlestar Galactica (whatever, that show is crack), John From Cincinatti (weird, but I liked it), a film that is two years late getting a North American release in Guy Ritchie’s “Revolver” and the most frustrating film experience (to some) of 2007 (I saw it four times and read the graphic novel), Southland Tales.

The films I’m looking most forward to that are being released in March are “Funny Games”, “Snow Angels”, “Paranoid Park”, “Stop-Loss” and “Doomsday”. I added all of the major films to this list so you can get an early jump before they come out on DVD if you haven’t already. There is also something very different about this Dartflix edition, that being the absence of trailers. I can explain that pretty easily...I’ve already posted them all. I’ve posted up trailers for movies that haven’t even been officially announced yet for God’s sake!

I find it hilarious that I post so often that I’ve exhausted all of the available trailers (read: interesting ones) on the internet. The next ten trailers I’m going to post up aren’t yet available and the films don’t drop until Summer ‘08 or Fall ‘08. Do me a favor and go back throught the previous 4 Dartflix entries and review my series Dart Adams presents A Tale Of Ten Trailers (I made 3 of them) to see some. On another note, can y’all believe this bullshit regarding the G.I. Joe movie casting and Leonardo DiCaprio remaking Akira but using the graphic novel storyline in live action? That’s gonna suck.

In other news, for those of you that actually read the graphic novel and thought that you’d see the same shit that’s in that book in the upcoming movie "Wanted", then you’re all fuckin’ high. There’s no way in hell they would allow that film to be created and released in theaters, think about it. They almost didn’t release “Fight Club”! People would’ve protested the content of that film immediately.

The other thing was that is was clearly inspired by “Watchmen” (which wrapped and post production is currently underway) and it was way too inside and appealed to die hard comic book/graphic novel fans. I’m looking forward to seeing the reinterpretation and exactly how much of the source material got sanitized (no Shithead) or completely glossed over/omitted.

I never thought that I’d run out of new trailers after making these bimonthly instead of weekly like the early days of this blog. Okay, now on to the recommendations and picks for the first half of the month:

Films I recommend to add to your queue early or for rental from either Netflix or Redbox:

Doomsday
Snow Angels
Funny Games
Paranoid Park
Stop-Loss
Drillbit Taylor
The Bank Job
Into The Wild

Southland Tales
Shogun Assassin Volume 4: Five Fistfuls Of Gold
Hitman
Tin Man
Battlestar Galactica: Season Three
Gattaca (Special Edition)

Bobby Deerfield
Lake Of Fire
Outlaw
Undoing
G.I. Jesus
Poor Boy’s Game
13: Game Of Death
You Move You Die
Kill Your Darlings
First Snow

Dart’s Picks:

Snow Angels-A character driven indie film about intertwining lives surrounding a high school with a stellar ensemble cast? Sign me up.

Doomsday-A new film taking on the old school theme of a paramilitary team trying to save the world after a virus reduces it to a post apocalyptic wastleland? Sign me up! I’d like to see how those old 80’s movies could be improved by new filming techniques/innovations and advanced technology.

Funny Games-It’s a remake of the original film in America by the same writer/director for the North American audience. The original is twisted and fucked up...sign me up!

Paranoid Park-Indie flick about skate kids in the Pacific Northwest surrounding a tragic event that happened during one of their night sessions.

WTF? Awards?Watch This Bullshit At Your Own Risk:

No Reservations-Romantic comedies suck 80% of the time...this one sucked as well.

Stargate: The Ark-Hell no!

10, 000 B.C.- This movie is bullshit for a bunch of reasons that I illustrated in my first A Tale Of Ten Trailers post (the very last trailer featured). Read it.

College Road Trip: Remember when I told you that Marty Lawrence had another bullshit flick coming out soon...this is it.

Meet The Browns: Tyler Perry wrote and directed it? Regardless of who’s in it *The feast is ruined!*

The Clash Of The Titans: Tonight @ TD Banknorth Garden

This is how the rest of the NBA sees the Celtics. The closest squad to them is the Detroit Pistons and they play tonight to change their season series from a split (1-1) and possibly inch themselves closer in the Eastern Conference fight for home court advantage throughout the playoffs as well as the best record in the NBA.

The Celtics are now 46-12 and can clinch a playoff spot tonight with a win and some losses by other squads and Detroit is 3 games behind at 44-16. This game is huge and it if it wasn't for the Celtics suffering a 3 game losing streak on their recent West Coast road trip while KG was trying to get his conditioning up and timing back then it could've been a potential 5 game lead going into tonight's action.

Due to my sister being smart enough to get some tickets to Celtics games a full year in advance (meaning while they still sucked and even BEFORE the official schedule was finalized she picked teams...we know people), I have seats to tonight's game (the last game I attended was versus the Spurs). Buc and I will leave in a few hours. I've been looking forward to ths game for close to a month now.
The Celtics are playing pretty well as of right now during this five game win streak. Kendrick Perkins has been on a tear averaging a double double and 3 blocks over the last three games and Rajon Rondo is playing some tremendous defense and racking up dimes like crazy (16 in one game and 10 in another). Ray Allen has snapped out of his shooting slump and he's been hot since the All Star Game. Tony Allen is back from injury and the C's just signed Sam Cassell to shore up the point guard position (he won't play tonight due to a wrist injury). This game is going to have a playoff atmosphere and I know it's gonna be loud as hell up in The Jungle.

It's all gonna come down to controlling the pace, defense (that includes rebounding) and being able to move the ball effectively to get those critical points in the paint. If they do that, they'll get to the free throw line enough to frustrate the Pistons (they also need to hit their free throws!). This means that Kendrick Perkins, Rajon Rondo, James Posey, Eddie House, Glen "Big Baby" Davis, Tony Allen and Leon Powe all need to have good games tonight.

The other scenario involves the Celtics running the Pistons into the ground and kicking their asses so bad that the ESPN, TNT and NBA TV analysts and commentators end up saying that the Boston Celtics are far and away the Beasts Of The East and the best team in the NBA. We'll see which scenario jumps off.

Edit (as of March 6th, 2008 12:45 PM):
We got to the game and we were up in the Balcony in Section 312 right next to the Dunkin' Donuts Kids Section. It's kinda cramped up there and I don't understand why people would go get food and bring in back to those tight ass seats and eat there. Eat somewhere else in front of one of the numerous monitors in the arena, don't try to do that Indiana Jones inching along the ledge sideways bullshit with a tray of chicken and french fries past me during the game. My knees are under my neck and I'm missing Rondo driving to the hole! Fuck outta here with that! Onto the game:

The arena was packed...and loud. The audience was hyped up in a way I haven't seen since I was at the 2005 Playoffs versus Indiana. The game started out fast and the Celtics were extra aggressive on offense and defense. They pushed at every opportunity they could. Taking the ball to the hole, sticking their defenders, boxing out, grabbing key rebounds, they did it all and jumped out to a 21-9 lead with just under 2:30 left in the 1st quarter.

The crowd was going crazy. KG. Perk and Rondo came to play and Ray Allen (3 pt, 8 reb, 5 ast) pretty much gave up his offense to do dirty work as a facilitator, he stayed on the perimeter rebounding and hitting the open man as a decoy.

Rajon Rondo kept pushing the pace and Kendrick Perkins (10 pt, 20 reb, 2 blk ) commanded the paint, this gave Kevin Garnett (31 pt, 6 reb, 2 ast) to freedom to knockdown the J and get in the paint to abuse his defender time and time again. The Pistons came back several times which is to be expected from a veteran squad that's battle tested, but the Celtics responded each time and pushed the lead right back to double digits again.

The last time the Pistons tied the game at 69-69 and after a bunch of odd calls, including a missed and one on Tony Allen which he was visibly upset about got him a tech for showing up the ref for bitching about a missed call, the Pistons hit a three and made it a one point game at 78-77.

Headband P had been sitting for mad long and people in the stands speculated that he was either in the doghouse or injured. We knew what was coming...Paul Pierce did his part and coolly stroked the three. We all knew the C's were pulling this one out (as did the Pistons). The Pistons had committed 5 team fouls before the Celtics even committed one in the 4th quarter and that ultimately did them in along with Kevin Garnett, Perk and Rondo. His dunk energized the entire arena...it was officially a wrap!

The C's outrebounded the Pistons 50-38 (20 came from Kendrick "The Hulk" Perkins) and they frustrated the Pistons all game long with tight team defense and their overall intensity to win 90-78. The Celtics are the Beasts Of The East and the best team in the NBA. Bring on the Lakers so they can get smoked again.

Dart Adams presents Another Goddamn List AKA 5 New On The Radar

Anyone that reads this blog regularly knows that while I love Hip Hop, I like different kinds of music and I’m up on all types of shit. Here’s a list of five groups or artists that you may or may not be up on. Here we go:

Santogold
Santogold is none other than Santi White, best known as the writer/arranger of Res’ classic album “How I Do” and the former frontwoman of the band Stiffed (some of you may also remember the magazine article where she went out on a date with Talib Kweli). She’s gone solo and now she’s down with the clique that consists of M.I.A, Spank Rock, Amanda Blank, and a few other heads (Bangers N’ Cash). Her production is currently handled by Diplo and Switch and her songs “L.E.S. Artistes”, “Find A Way” and “Creator” have music fans anticipating the full length. Check her out here:

http://www.myspace.com/santogold

Idle Warship
Idle Warship consists of underground hero Talib Kweli and the aforementioned songstress Res. Talib and Res have been friends for years and she’s been under the Blacksmith flag for a while so the combination of the two isn’t a surprise. Not only does Res sing but she rhymes as well which IS a surprise and the new song “Screamin’” featuring MC Chris (Nerdcore pioneer and Aqua Teen Hunger Force featured guest) came completely out of left field. What will they do next and when is the LP coming? Get updates here:

http://www.myspace.com/idlewarship

Dolly
If you’re not familiar with Flying Lotus or their previous releases “1983” or last years way too short “Reset EP” then you need to get familiar with those first. Meanwhile, check out their new project. They have a vocalist named Ahu and when you add Flying Lotus production to her vocals now you have Dolly. If you like that next shit then you’ll enjoy this:

http://www.myspace.com/ahhu

Little Dragon
I found out about this group in a roundabout way. I have subscribed to I think 250 different MySpace pages and one of them belongs to Ge-ology, well known underground producer of Hip Hop and R&B. On his page he has some tracks up from his upcoming project “Specialty Selections” (if you run across the sampler anywhere, cop it!) and the vocalist on those tracks is named Yukimi Nagano and she kills it.
I couldn’t find her in Ge-ology’s Top 40 so I did a Google search and found out that she’s in a group based out of Sweden called Little Dragon. I found their MySpace page and I’ve rockin’ their joints ever since. Check ‘em out here:

http://www.myspace.com/yourlittledragon

After The Smoke
I have family in Florida (What up Eyeznpowa and Duhknocka! Hey Dirk, Jasmine and Isis!) and I often run across groups from there through them. Buc and I ended up running across this group out of Tallahassee called After The Smoke that are on some ol’ next shit. They feature a producer (Speek), a few emcees (Essay Real, Whuzi & Joey+) and a female vocalist (Carmen). Their music is Hip Hop with an obvious wide range of influences. Check these cats out and remember I put you on to them first:

Revenge Of The 80's presents Thundarr The Barbarian

In October 1980, ABC premiered the cartoon “Thundarr The Barbarian”. It was produced by Ruby-Spears (Space Ghost, The Herculoids & Scooby-Doo, Where Are You?) and it was set in a post apocalyptic future where the world was overrun by magician overlords, mutated creatures and mad scientists.

The story goes that in 1994, a runaway planet zipped through our solar system and passed between the Earth and the moon. This phenomenon caused the moon to break in half and Earth went through huge climate changes and tidal waves based on the destruction of the moon. The radiation given off by the dying planet that passed so close to the Earth also depleted the ozone layer and caused much of the animal, human and plant life to die as well. The events that happened in “Thundarr The Barbarian” occurred 2000 years after this cataclysm.

The series starred Thundarr, a traveler/adventurer armed with a mystical weapon called the Sun Sword. It was simply a hilt that he kept fastened to a wristband, but when beef jumped off he’d pull it off and it became a sword with a blade made of fire and electricity (kinda like a lightsaber). He rolled with Ookla The Mok, a superstrong creature (that was clearly a fake version of Chewbacca) and a woman called Princess Ariel (which was nothing like Princess Leia) who was also a powerful sorceress who wouldn’t hesitate to let some fireballs fly when it was time to scrap.

While the characters were partly inspired by the popular Star Wars films, the actual premise of the cartoon went a lot deeper than the casual viewer would think. “Thundarr The Barbarian” was created by some of the most influential minds in the cartoon and comic book world. The series was the idea of Steve Gerber (Defenders, Man-Thing, Howard The Duck) and the characters were designed by comic book and animation legend Alex Toth (Superfriends, Space Ghost, Herculoids, Birdman) and comic book legend Jack Kirby (Captain America, Fantastic Four, Hulk, Avengers, X-Men).

It's creation was partly inspired by Conan The Barbarian, Kirby’s DC comic book “Kamandi: The Last Boy On Earth”, and several post apocalyptic films that preceeded it like Planet Of The Apes, Mad Max, The Road Warrior, Wizards, Damnation Alley, Escape From New York and the burgeoning underground Cyberpunk movement. Another wellspring of inspiration for “Thundarr” was the imminent threat of a nuclear war.

The late 70’s and early 80’s were full of futurists and scientists trying to figure out exactly what would happen to the Earth in the event of a nuclear holocaust. Oddly enough, most of these theories made it into the world that Thundarr lived in, coincidence? It was always assumed that the folks at Ruby-Spears didn’t want to make a post nuclear war cartoon for kids, somehow but they still did anyways given the obvious subtext of the episodes.

For those of you that weren’t alive during the run of this show (1980-1983), you wouldn’t understand that it was pretty accepted that the world would be felled by a nuclear war and it was simply a matter of when. All you had to do was look at a Def Leppard album cover, read an issue of Heavy Metal magazine or take into account that the movie “The Man Who Saw Tomorrow” was nothing more than Orson Welles trying to predict the exact date of the end of the world.

With the Cold War in full effect the arms race was nothing but MX missle after MX missle being created. The kids that watched this cartoon weren’t just thinking it was pure fantasy and entertainment. We were trying to see identify each destroyed city from each episode from the clues.

Thundarr, Ookla and Ariel would run into psycho wizards, ruthless overlords, deadly creatures and the like every settlement they trekked to and subsequently kicked their asses. Thundarr would jump down from somewhere screaming at the top of his lungs swinging the Sun Sword, Ookla would be growling and throwing boulders or some shit while Princess Ariel would be shooting some beams out of her hands. Kids all over the playground would be screaming while pouncing on fools and saying shit like “Demon dogs!” or “Lords of light!” as they wove around imaginary Sun Swords.

The funniest thing I can remember from Thundarr and his crew’s travels was waiting for them to reach a post apocalyptic Boston. The first episode happened in New York (big surprise!) so when they never reached Boston in the first season we thought they’d never go there. In the fourth episode of the second season they finally reached Boston, only it was infested with bad guys...the episode was called “The City Of Evil”, I never forgot that one. During the run of the show seminal flicks like Heavy Metal, War Games, Rock & Rule and Blade Runner came out and further cemented the cartoons themes.

The show ran for two seasons on ABC for a total of 21 episodes (13 the 1st season and 8 the 2nd) and the third year the show switched to NBC’s Saturday morning lineup and all 21 previous episodes were aired as reruns. The show came back via Cartoon Network in the late 90’s and in 2004 Thundarr, Ookla The Mok and Princess Ariel were made into action figures. Watching it now, it’s just another cartoon from the 80’s that I used to watch as a kid. Hopefully, no one tries to buy this property and turn it into another crappy movie.
