It&...The re-dub did not "make the movie". It's a soulless cash grab without emotion and commitment from the actors. The re-dub makes the movie worse.

All the great quotes are in the original English dub. "Just when my coil's reaching the green line!" and "Fight like man!" have so much more character and are what a biker punk would say than "My motor coils were just getting warmed up." and "Fight with your bare hands!". Calling the government agent "the funeral director" is more direct mockery of his appearance than asking if he's "going to a funeral". "They don't teach tact at the academy." says more about a military leader's personality than "I never studied the two subjects in school, it would seem." And "Men, we're going to the Olympics!" is much more attention-grabbing than the generic "Lift off! We're going after Tetsuo!'. There's nothing "tough love" about that "You want a bike like this? Steal one your self!" line and it doesn't illustrate Kaneda's character. He's more direct in the Streamline dub about how Tetsuo needs to improve as a biker ("Maybe when you downed your first clown").

In the old version, the teens sound like actual bikers. In the new dub, they sound like actors pretending to be teenage bikers. There's nothing "punk" about their voices, which sound too clean. The Streamline dub succeeds with the core of the meaning of this film because the actors sound like what the youth of the future will be like, while the actors in the Pioneer dub are just pretending.

The people who pull the nostalgia card against the original dub are usually ironically nostalgic towards the new dub and don't realize it. The depth and style are there in the original dub. The Streamline version is that and more - it's intense, passionate, and real. The Pioneer dub is anything but - it's generic, fake, and lacking in any realism.gsbrhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16948692444036710696noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6420176845224246684.post-23919647102569775352022-07-14T11:36:58.297-04:002022-07-14T11:36:58.297-04:00Me neither I can't watch the new versionMe neither I can't watch the new version
Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6420176845224246684.post-24984212324857431612021-06-24T09:51:56.002-04:002021-06-24T09:51:56.002-04:00I personally like Both. I've just seen a special September 2020 4K screening of Akira. It was screened in Japanese audio with english subtitles exclusively. They weren't doing a single showing in my state so I drove 3 hours to make a screening. It was absolutely incredible. It was the first time in 15 or so years since I watched the Japanese version and I have to say, the Pioneer dub sticks very close to the english subtitles presented. I grew up on the Pioneer dub so I don't have this reaction that others seem to have. I'm eagerly awaiting the 4K bluray release December 22nd 2020, it's 3 discs, so hopefully there's plenty of goodies to get into. If you're reading this in the future, hope you get to see it in theatres one day! Check it out if at all possible.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6420176845224246684.post-76607285359804468262017-05-21T19:24:39.080-04:002017-05-21T19:24:39.080-04:00I just went to watch akira on kodi. It's acted better, better synced to the image (it's easier to forget you're watching a dub, whilst the original dub often was very mismatched to the lip animation, though it is harder here, since AKIRA's facial animation was matched to the voice acting, like in western animation, instead of the usual anime "lip flap" which is animated before dialogue is recorded), and much, much closer to the Japanese version. I do find the shrivelled little girl's voice to be very grating, though. That being said I have such a major nostalgic soft-spot for the old dub, for sure, and I think it should be made available for people who do love it (perhaps licensing issues?)DistantJhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00599625875769707794noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6420176845224246684.post-58268887077650719572016-07-22T22:37:06.458-04:002016-07-22T22:37:06.458-04:00The re-dub made the movie! Steal one your self!"
Such a great and simple way to illustrate Kaneda's character and his tough love treatment of Tetsuo. In the old version the teens sound like a 50s afterschool special, in the new dub they sound like actual teens, which is core to the meaning of this film. What will the youth of the future be like?

Seriously can't understand the original dub, but for nostalgia, the depth or the style is not there. In the new dub it has been washed out so it blends in with the ambient noise. The script was waaaay better in the original too. You could see how everyone dismissed Tetsuo as a little kid and he was growing to resent it. In the new version there just isn't much emotional content at all.
I can watch the new version for about thirty seconds before I have to jump up and turn it off.
Ironically, I have the original VHS but can't find a VCR to play it on! The voice actor that did Kaneda was the same guy who did Leonardo in the old TMNT show and has a long career in voice acting. When i read the comic, its in his voice. For me, he will always be Kaneda.

As for dub vs sub, anything i grew up with, I stick to the format i originally watched it in. Now a days I go with both or subbed with anything new, English dubs tend to stray too far from the original dialogue. If it doesnt make sense in english, the subs will make more sense.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03325169396564027569noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6420176845224246684.post-16172194812518127732013-05-26T19:27:52.689-04:002013-05-26T19:27:52.689-04:00Gave the redub one shot when it was released back ...Gave the redub one shot when it was released back in 2001. I personally like the new dub, some voices do fit better than the original(like the guy who has the red grenade who's going to kill himself for"the revolution" is flawless compared to the original), the thing that bugs and really pisses me off is that girl who looks like an old lady, she sounds horrible! the original voice of hers was so much smoother. that's why I returned my copy and just streamed it online because I can't accept something if I feel totally ripped off. even if it was a few minor things, it irritates me to the point where I just can't enjoy it no more. okay that's it, i'm doneDanicosnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6420176845224246684.post-19327148600127961622010-07-16T23:31:10.238-04:002010-07-16T23:31:10.238-04:00Dude, thank you for making this page.
